Rays call up Joe Boyle from Triple A for surprise start vs. Braves

TAMPA — The Rays have called up hard-throwing right-hander Joe Boyle to start today’s game against the Braves.

There is no indication of any injuries in the rotation. The move, which manager Kevin Cash presumably will explain later this afternoon, could be a way for the team to give their starters an extra day of rest during a homestand with 13 games in 13 days.

Shane Baz, who was scheduled to start today, will likely be pushed back a day.

Boyle, 25, was acquired from the Athletics in an offseason trade involving Jeffrey Springs.
