Pink bat carries special meaning for Maybin

WASHINGTON -- The color pink, whether on bats, the scoreboard or fans' attire, was splashed throughout Nationals Park Sunday. The reason was Mother's Day.

The color signifies more than that for Braves outfielder Cameron Maybin.

"Not only symbolizing Mother's Day, but pink in general symbolizes the fight against breast cancer," Maybin said. "For me, it's a huge day."

He then explained why by revealing difficult family details. His grandmother passed away from breast cancer. An aunt is a four-time breast cancer survivor. A 30-year-old cousin had a lump removed.

"It runs in my family," said Maybin, whose foundation supports breast cancer

Using a pink bat, Maybin went 1-for-4 and drove in the Braves' first run of the game with a second-inning RBI single during a 5-4 loss to the Nationals.
