Open thread, 9/20/91, birth of a #Braves ace

Tom Glavine won the Cy Young in ’91, and John Smoltz pitched Game 7, but Steve Avery was the ace.

His start vs. the Dodgers on this date 24 years ago stands as one of the most memorable regular season games in team history.

The Braves entered the three game series in L.A. trailing the Dodgers by a half-game. Avery and Tim Belcher matched zeroes until the 6th, when Ron Gant, who had been stuck on 29 HR’s for weeks, slammed a two-run homer. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning but Avery got Juan Samuel on a hard liner to right to preserve the shutout.
