One of the many reasons baseball is great: an unending roil of waves of “stuff that happens,” crashing against the rocks of “stuff that was likely to happen.” Like the spray of sea foam, the possibilities are endless, but we’ve all seen enough to understand, in general terms, how waves work. Still, 2020 was the weirdest of seasons, which might have crimped our collective forecasting acumen a bit. A lot of things that happened over 60 games will prove to be mirages, while others may end up being brief starts of longer trends. Here’s one thing for each player on the Opening Day roster that I’ll be watching as the season unfolds.
