DENVER -- Lefty Sean Newcomb retired 16 straight at one point, and was backed by homers by Nick Markakis, Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies as the Braves beat the Rockies, 4-0, on Sunday, to win the opening three-game series at Coors Field.
Newcomb struck out nine in six-plus innings, and didn't give up a baserunner between Trevor Story's two-out single in the first and consecutive singles by Nolan Arenado and Story to open the seventh. But Shane Carle, who pitched briefly for the Rockies last season, extracted an Ian Desmond double-play grounder and a fly ball from Gerardo Parra to end the inning.
