Canyon Brown became Seabreeze's first Major League Baseball draft pick in nearly two decades Monday.
The Kansas City Royals selected Brown, an all-conference catcher at North Carolina A&T, with the second pick of the ninth round (257th overall). According to Baseball Reference, the last Sandcrabs chosen in the MLB draft both went off the board in 2006 — John Wiedenbauer (24th round, Los Angeles Angels) and Jonathan Pigott (2006, Atlanta Braves).
Brown described receiving the awaited phone call as "super exciting and surreal," celebrating the moment privately with his mother Casey and sister Ciara. His father, Craig, died unexpectedly last August at age 50.
