The Braves rebuild was approximately two months old when the Braves acquired Mike Foltynewicz.
At that point, the rebuild’s laser focus on high-upside pitching prospects was starting to show, and Foltynewicz was a worthwhile gamble as the headlining prospect in the deal that sent Evan Gattis to the Astros. He was then ranked as the 57th prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline, and 59th by Baseball America. Not all outlets were so bullish on him at the time, however, as Fangraphs’ Kiley McDaniel projected his ceiling as a fourth starter or useful reliever.
