Major League Baseball's season strikeout record likely will be broken Tuesday for the 12th straight year - with five days to spare. Batters enter play with 41,098 strikeouts. There were 41,207 strikeouts last season and 40,104 in 2017, when the 40,000 mark was broken for the first time.
Before the record run started in 2008, the mark had been 32,404 in 2001. Strikeouts totaled 29,937 in 1996 before breaking the 30,000 for the first time the following year.
FINAL DAYS
The Kansas City Royals host the Atlanta Braves in their first game since manager Ned Yost announced Monday he plans to retire at the end of the season.
