A former Braves pitcher died after he got into a car crash en route to an event to remember Sept. 11 attacks.
Anthony Varvaro, 37, retired from the MLB in 2016 to become a police officer at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The Braves confirmed Varvaro’s death on Sunday afternoon.
“We are deeply saddened on the passing of former Braves pitcher Anthony Varvaro. Anthony, 37, played parts of six seasons in the majors, including four with Atlanta,” the team said.
Varvaro pitched for the Braves from 2011 to 2014.
