Brewers pitcher Smith appeals eight-game ban (AFP)

Milwaukee (AFP) - Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Will Smith was issued an eight-game suspension Friday by Major League Baseball for having a foreign substance on his arm to help him grip baseballs.

The 25-year-old left-hander says he will file an appeal to the ban and as a result he will be eligible to play for the Brewers until the appeal process in completed.

Smith was ejected from Milwaukee's 10-1 loss to Atlanta on Thursday after the grip-aiding substance, what he described as a mixture of rosin and sunscreen, was discovered on his right forearm after he took the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning.
