Yesterday’s date is a pretty historic day in Atlanta Braves franchise history. Forty-five years ago yesterday, Hank Aaron hit his 715th career home run. Twenty-five years ago yesterday, Kent Mercker threw the last no-hitter in franchise history. And a year ago yesterday, Sean Newcomb arguably pitched the best game of his career in the exact same park the Braves and Rockies are playing tonight.
Newcomb would go six innings in a 4-0 Braves win against the Rockies. The relevance of that night is that it likely was the last time Newcomb looked as dominant as he did in the last five innings of Sunday’s start against the Marlins.
