With the trades of Lucas Harrell and Dario Alvarez, there were very clearly some holes that were going to have to be filled in on the roster. Matt Marksberry and Jose Ramirez were the first moves towards that end but there is clearly a need for a spot start at least in the near term plus the potential need to spell some of these relievers.
Also, with the trade deadline looming, a guy who can pitch out of the bullpen as well as make a spot start here and there has some value which does explain today’s move reasonably well.
