Sean Newcomb struggled early and the Atlanta Braves’ comeback attempt fell just short in a 6-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. Newcomb lasted just three innings while allowing the Nats to build a 5-0 lead. A pair of two-run homers by Tyler Flowers and Charlie Culberson cut the deficit to 5-4 but that was as close as Atlanta would get.
Despite the loss, the Braves magic number was reduced to eight after the Phillies suffered a 6-4 loss in Miami. Atlanta still leads the NL East by 6.
