ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta Braves backup infielder Phil Gosselin will miss about eight weeks because of a fractured left thumb.
The team announced that Gosselin will undergo surgery Wednesday in Atlanta. The 26-year-old is hitting .325 with two RBIs in 40 at-bats after making the opening-day roster for the first time in his big league career.
To replace Gosselin, the Braves selected the contract of infielder Adonis Garcia from Triple-A Gwinnett, where the 30-year-old Cuban was leading the team with a .351 average and 21 RBIs.
Garcia will be making his major league debut when he joins the Braves for Tuesday's home game against Tampa Bay.
