Making an emergency start in place of Drew Smyly, who was placed on the Injured List with left forearm inflammation earlier on Thursday, Kyle Wright threw 78 pitches in his 2021 debut. Of those 78 pitches across 4 1⁄3 innings of work, four hit a Cubs batter. The result? Wright tied the record for most hit batsmen in a game going back to 1901 (though our Brent tells me that Spanish-American war veteran John Grimes hit six batters in a game in 1987), and moreover, now has the most thrown HBPs in the majors.
