I’ll just come right out and say it: I don’t know how anyone else feels, but I think the idea of projecting relievers is awful. Bullpens are definitely a part of a major league team, but aside from a handful of relievers in the business that can be expected to provide superlative performance, everyone else seems to just blend in to the morass of players we consider “middle relievers.” Of course, that isn’t to say that these middle relievers aren’t devastating to opposing hitters, because they are. Back in the 1990s, the average reliever was pretty much the same as the average pitcher, with an FIP- around 100.
