Unai Emery's Aston Villa failed to bounce back from last week's loss against United as Wolves saw out a cagey 1-0 victory at Molineux on Saturday afternoon.
The home side came out swinging with Gomes finding the back of Martinez's net in just nine minutes, bulleting a header past the World Cup winner off a good-looking corner by Ruben Neves.
Emi Buendia forced Jose Sa into a leaping save five minutes later but Villa looked weaker and Unai Emery sharpened up the attack after the break by swapping Bertrand Traore for Leon Bailey.
