Old habits die hard. Aston Villa, very much in this game for 85 minutes, succumbed to defensive calamity. The wait for a win goes on. Question marks still linger.
The villains were two new signings, Pierluigi Gollini and Tommy Elphick, costing more than £7million between them.
They had both impressed but disaster struck. Gollini, a 21-year-old goalkeeper from Verona, miscued a routine clearance. Elphick, their captain who marshalled the back four imperiously all afternoon at Sheffield Wednesday, lost his bearings as the ball swirled.
