Aston Villa spoiled Aitor Karanka's Nottingham Forest welcome party as Scott Hogan's first half header ensured three points went back to the Midlands.
The former Brentford striker nipped in front of Forest goalkeeper Jordan Smith to meet Robert Snodgrass' delivery midway through the first half.
Karanka shuffled his pack as he searched for an equaliser but to no avail and with Bristol City slipping to defeat at Norwich, Steve Bruce's Villa side rise to fourth.
