Aston Villa have seen a £9million bid for James Chester accepted by West Bromwich Albion with the Wales centre-back expected to undergo a medical at Bodymoor Heath.
Roberto Di Matteo is determined to strengthen his side for a push at promotion back to the Premier League and sees Chester as a leader in defence.
A deal could be completed in the next 24 hours, with Middlesbrough declining to match the fee demanded by West Brom.
Villa have lost both their games this season and suffered an embarrassing 3-1 defeat to League Two Luton Town in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night where their defensive frailties were exposed.
