Newcastle kept their narrow lead at the top of the table by beating Wigan 2-1 at St James’ Park. Dwight Gayle netted his 22nd goal of the season to put the hosts in front just before the break, but the Latics pulled level early in the second half - Michael Jacobs with the equaliser. The visitors could not hold on though, as Matt Ritchie made it 2-1 soon after by heading home his own rebound. The Magpies held on to claim all three points and remain at the top of the Championship table.
Brighton had to fight hard, but they picked up a valuable three points against Blackburn to keep the pressure on league leaders Newcastle.
