Steve Bruce was denied a winning return to St Andrews by a thumping second-half strike from David Davis.
Birmingham thought they had taken the lead through Clayton Donaldson but the striker's header crashed off the bar and onto the line without crossing fully.
The visitors broke the deadlock through Gary Gardner's bullet header from ten yards out but Birmingham grabbed a deserved equaliser through David Davis to claim a point.
