We were rewarded for an excellent start with the opening goal after 20 minutes, Gabriel Martinelli nodding home when debutant Oleksandr Zinchenko headed a deep corner back across goal.
Fellow debutant Gabriel Jesus was looking lively up front, but it was a third debut-maker, William Saliba – who caught the eye in defence as the hosts powered back and put us under pressure.
