Bernd Leno proved the thorn in Liverpool's side after the Arsenal goalkeeper frustrated the hosts to help Mikel Arteta's men into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Following a goalless bore draw after 90 minutes, Leno kept out spot-kicks from Harry Wilson and Divock Origi having made a string of fine saves to deny Jurgen Klopp's outfit in regulation time.
Liverpool had the better of the chances at Anfield but missed a number of big chances including an effort from Takumi Minamino who hit the crossbar in front of an open goal in the first period.
