Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has signed for big-spending non-league side Billericay Town.
The 34-year-old, who spent time playing for Bury last season, has decided to join the Isthmian League Premier Division side who made headlines earlier this year when they signed Paul Konchesky and Jamie O’Hara.
The club’s owner and first team manager Glenn Tamplin has made no secret of his ambition to build Billericay into a side that can move up the leagues and Pennant’s arrival is the latest high-profile move in his quest.
It had looked as if the winger was on course to join Scottish Premiership side Hibernian, after turning out for them in pre-season, but he decided against signing for Neil Lennon’s team and opted for Billericay where he will earn around £3,000-a-week.
