The introduction of squad numbers to football will have saddened traditionalists who preferred the starting XI kitted out in numbers one to 11. Each player's position determining their shirt number.
Many players - especially the top ones - still prefer the classic shirt numbers of legendary players from the game: No9 for a centre forward, No10 for a forward playing slightly behind, No11 for a left winger, No1 for a goalkeeper. You know the drill.
And many teams have iconic shirt numbers that players and the club want their stars to wear (often for marketing reasons), such as the No7 at Manchester United and Liverpool.
