Beth Mead says she and her England team-mates are determined to help diversify the women’s game after she was quoted as saying the make-up of England's squad was ‘coincidental’.
The build-up to the Lionesses game with Japan was dominated by talk around the lack of ethnic diversity in the squad and Mead’s comments in an interview with the Guardian drew heavy criticism on social media.
Arsenal legend and pundit Ian Wright said on ITV before the game that the lack of diversity in the women’s international game is a ‘systemic problem’ and that he had called Mead to speak with her.
