Barcelona 4-1 Arsenal: Clinical Catalans put down statement of intent in Women's Champions League opener by THRASHING Jonas Eidevall's Gunners side at Johan Cruyff Stadium

Arsenal Women began their Champions League group stage with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of reigning champions Barcelona.

The Gunners had won all nine of their matches under new boss Jonas Eidevall but were outplayed by a dominant Barcelona side, who are top of La Liga with five wins and 35 goals from five games.

The hosts went ahead on the half-hour mark when Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger could only push Asisat Oshoala’s shot out to Mariona Caldentey, who fired into the bottom right corner.

They doubled their lead shortly before half-time when Oshoala beat the offside trap to pick out Alexia Putellas, who fired a first-time finish into the roof of the net.
