Fernandez de Oliveira ousted at U.S. Amateur
University of Arkansas senior All-American Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira was eliminated Wednesday in his opening match at the U.S. Amateur championship at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J.
Fernandez de Oliveira, the 28th seed in the 64-man field, lost on the first playoff hole to No. 37 seed Hayden Hopewell of Australia.
Fernandez de Oliveira had a 2-up lead after 13 holes, but lost the 14th and 15th to Hopewell. The two players swapped wins on the 16th and 17th before halving the par-4 18th.
Hopewell birdied the first playoff hole to secure the victory and advance to today's round of 32.
