SEC basketball notebook: Auburn proving its No. 1 ranking is no fluke

No. 1 Auburn survived its first two games without player of the year candidate Johni Broome in solid fashion.

The Tigers thrashed No. 15 Mississippi State 88-66 last Tuesday, limiting the Bulldogs to 3 of 24 (12.5%) shooting from three-point range and hitting 33 of 60 (55%) from the field themselves to run up the deficit, despite being out-rebounded 42-30.

The action at No. 23 Georgia was much more tense on Saturday. The Tigers had to fend off a furious rally from the Bulldogs to survive a 70-68 finish at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga.

Georgia freshman Asa Newell missed a tip-in try at the buzzer as the Bulldogs inbounded with 0.
