Arkansas offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino is no longer a candidate in the head coaching search at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, according to ESPN's Chris Low. Petrino reportedly withdrew his name from consideration after having discussed the job with officials at Charlotte.
The Charlotte Observer reported Sunday that Petrino was among the top candidates for the job, along with North Carolina State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson and Charlotte interim coach Tim Brewster. The Observer indicated a decision would be made by the middle of the week.
The 49ers fired second-year coach Biff Poggi in November after a 3-7 start to the season.
