Brown, who broke Razorbacks color barrier, dies

FAYETTEVILLE — Darrell Brown, who broke the color barrier for the football program at the University of Arkansas, died Saturday of bladder cancer. He was 67.

Brown became the first black player to ever suit up for Arkansas' football team when he walked-on during the 1965 season. Brown played for the school's freshman team that year and didn't return to the program for his sophomore season.

Five years later, Jon Richardson became the first black football player to play for the Razorbacks' varsity team.

Brown was recognized during a 2011 football game with a plaque commemorating his role in the integration of the program.
