Count Arkansas coach Bret Bielema among those concerned about the state’s new gun law.
House Bill 1249, which was signed by Gov. Asa Hutchinson on March 22, allows people to carry concealed handguns on publicly owned land after the completion of an eight-hour training course created by state police. The Arkansas Senate added an amendment that exempts college sporting events from the law.
The bill would go into effect September 1, 2018, but has not yet passed the Arkansas House and still can be amended.
“Just an initial reaction, because I’m the head coach at Arkansas, of course … my only thing that jumps out right away was concern with how it was going to be handled,” Bielema said.
