Barry Lunney Jr. considered himself to be “effectively wild” while he pitched at Fort Smith Southside from 1990-92.
That might have been a blessing in disguise at a time when high school baseball was relatively new in Fort Smith, and Lunney had just started attending Southside before his sophomore year — the same year the Rebels had their first baseball team.
Holloway played football on a state championship team as well in 2000 for Booneville, but the Bearcats were the talk of the town in spring 2001 when they won their only state championship in baseball after beating Central Arkansas Christian 2-1 in the final game at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.
