Arkansas track's oldest record tied by Reuben Reina at indoor opener

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas distance runner Reuben Reina tied Razorback royalty Friday at the Arkansas Invitational.

Reina, a redshirt junior, ran the mile in 3 minutes, 55.40 seconds at Randal Tyson Track Center to tie the program record set by Niall O’Shaughnessy in 1977. O’Shaughnessy’s time was handheld and Reina was timed electronically.

O’Shaughnessy, who died of brain cancer in 2015, was the first All-American for legendary Arkansas men’s coach John McDonnell. O’Shaughnessy is widely credited for paving the way for the Razorbacks’ dynasty in distance events.

That history includes Reina’s father, also named Reuben, who was an eight-time All-American at Arkansas from 1987-91.
