FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas catcher Casey Opitz went undrafted Thursday.
Opitz, a third-year player who can classify as a junior again next season, is likely to return to the Razorbacks’ baseball team. He was batting .302 with 11 RBI in 14 games before the 2020 season was suspended in March.
Opitz is known best for his defense. He has thrown out 35 of 75 base runners during his career and has committed nine errors in 93 games.
During the fourth round of the draft, ESPN analyst Kyle Peterson implored MLB teams to draft Opitz.
“Somebody needs to take Casey Opitz soon because you’re missing out on a major-league catcher that I think can catch and throw at the big-league level right now,” Peterson said.
