Rio Rico’s Carlos Villarreal posted a time of 4 minutes 5.25 seconds to win the Nike Prefontaine Classic’s Elite High School Boys Mile Race on Friday night in Eugene, Oregon.

Villarreal saved his best for last: He rallied from 8 meters back in the final lap to take the win.

Villarreal, UA signee, is one of Southern Arizona’s top high school runners. Earlier this month, he broke the state record in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4 minutes 3.97 seconds and repeated as the 800-meter state champ with a time of 1:54.23, the best of any runner in any division.
