University of Arizona football coach Rich Rodriguez has a simple method for determining who his starting quarterback will be this season.
“It’s not very complicated,” he said. “More than anything, it’s who plays the best.”
Arizona, which opens the season Sept. 3 against BYU at University of Phoenix Stadium, has a lot of issues, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. After giving up 35.8 points per game last season and ranking 114th in the nation in total defense, Rodriguez overhauled his coaching staff. Out was the entire defensive staff, including coordinator Jeff Casteel; his replacement is Marcel Yates, formerly the defensive coordinator at Boise State.
