In a competition that may always be known as the final Olympic event for Michael Phelps, the University of Arizona had a nice little tie-in. In the heats of the 4 x 100-meter medley relay, Kevin Cordes swam the breaststroke leg in 59.51 seconds, helping the USA qualify for the finals and setting up Phelps’ final swim. This allowed Cordes to take home a gold medal after just missing out on a medal earlier in the week, even though he did not get to swim the final. Not a bad consolation prize
