Bickley: College football needs an 8-team playoff

Change comes slowly to college football. Evolution isn’t always pretty and rarely embraced. But the prevailing lesson of the 2016 season couldn’t be more clear:

It’s time for the sport to grow up and get in the fast lane.

“We’re going to be hard-pressed to stay with four playoff teams,” said Ray Anderson, Arizona State’s vice president of athletics. “The appetite for expanding the playoffs is growing. The fans want it and the money is there. We’re going to have to find a way to get to eight (teams) as soon as possible.”

The impending announcement of the College Football Playoff pairings comes with many troubling issues.
