In one of the wildest finishes imaginable, Bernard Lagat, who is a volunteer assistant track coach at Arizona, finished in 6th place, then 3rd for the bronze, and finally 5th in the Men’s 5000 meters.
Although the 41-year old Lagat originally finished in 6th place, he soon learned that several runners ahead of him were disqualified, boosting him to a bronze medal. It appeared those runners broke a rule stating when an athlete is running on a bend, he cannot step on or inside the line marking the applicable border.
Initially, Paul Chelimo of the United States was disqualified after finishing in silver medal position, and he immediately said he would appeal the ruling.
