Here’s how unhappy UA coaches were as they prepared to face Washington this week: They didn’t name any captains.
The Thursday-night tradition came and went with nobody identified. Before kickoff Saturday, two players — quarterback Jerrard Randall and wide receiver David Richards — walked to midfield for the coin toss. It marked the first time under Rich Rodriguez that the UA has used fewer than four game captains. The coach typically selects four players, most of them seniors, for each game; the captains change every week.
Randall’s selection didn’t portend any shakeup at quarterback. Anu Solomon started and played the first three drives before Randall was summoned to replace him.
