Since Arizona State began a grand experiment with its football program by hiring Herm Edwards as coach, two schools of thought have emerged.
It’s either going to blow up the program and leave everyone involved in his hiring scarred, or it’s going to be supremely successful and create a niche market for 64-year-old coaches who haven’t worked at the college level in 30 years.
There is a third possible outcome, however, and it’s the most likely. ASU football continues being ASU football. The Sun Devils will provide us with average seasons most of the time, maybe contend for Cheez-It-level bowls in most years, but never become a consistent contender for a conference title, much less a national championship.
