New USA Swimming President and CEO Tim Hinchey said Arizona State swim coach Bob Bowman would not have been named to the 2012 U.S. Olympic staff had he been in charge in 2011.
Bowman had admitted to sending sexually inappropriate text messages to former U.S. national team swimmer Caroline Burckle in May 2011. He was reprimanded by USA Swimming in June 2011 before being named to the Olympic staff a few months later in September.
Bowman also was the U.S. men’s Olympic head coach at the 2016 Olympics. He was hired by ASU in 2015.
Hinchey was hired by USA Swimming in June 2017 to replace the late Chuck Wielgus.
