Undrafted but undeterred, Herm Edwards became nine-year starter in NFL

This is the second of a four-part series profiling the life of new Arizona State football coach Herm Edwards.

Herm Edwards doesn’t smoke. Or drink. Or, as much as is humanly possible, cuss.

His workout discipline is legendary even now at age 64, let alone when he was coming out of college in 1977.

“The work part I’ve got down,” the first-year Arizona State football coach says. “Those are my marching orders. I’ve lived my whole life that way.”

Yet Edwards was left out of the 1977 NFL draft, then 12 rounds with 335 players selected, even though his talent to play at the next level was apparent.
