When given the chance to play a fifth season of college softball, Kindra and Maddi Hackbarth didn't hesitate.
But the twins were intent on coming back to Arizona State even better as so-called super seniors, both in playing and leadership capacities for a team that opens its season Thursday ranked No. 16 (USA Today/NFCA poll).
The Sun Devils ended at No. 17 in the same poll after 2020 was cut short enough by the coronavirus pandemic that the NCAA gave all spring sport athletes an extra year of eligibility. In addition to the Hackbarths, pitcher Cielo Meza and designated player Ali Tatnall took advantage to make a final push for the Women's College World Series, which ASU last reached in 2018.
