Arizona State's new football field will not only be ready for the season opener Sept. 3 but also for a possible scrimmage two weeks before then if all goes well with an 88,000-square-foot sod installation that began Thursday.
Brian Johnson, ASU manager of athletic grounds facilities, said he is "very confident" that the field would be ready for a scrimmage Aug. 20 if coach Todd Graham decides to have one at Sun Devil Stadium, in the second major phase of a $268 million reconstruction.
"When people see cranes on the field a month ago, they kind of wonder," he said.
