Arizona State baseball still has an outside chance of finishing .500 in the Pac-12 and perhaps as high as fifth place.
The Sun Devils (22-30, 12-15) also can marginally improve on their 23-win total from 2017 with three games remaining starting Thursday against California (30-21, 14-13).
But honestly, the season-ending home stand is all about Spencer Torkelson and his home-run record pursuit.
After hitting three homers last week, Torkelson has 25, tied for second in school history behind Mitch Jones, who had 27 in 2000. He can become the first freshman to lead the nation in homers – Cal sophomore Andrew Vaughn is second nationally with 23 – and is one homer off the NCAA freshman record set by Georgia Southern’s Todd Green in 1990.
