Spencer Torkelson hit his 20th home run Friday night, becoming the first Arizona State baseball player with consecutive 20-homer seasons since Bob Horner in 1977 (22) and '78 (25).
He also drove in the winning run in the 11th inning of No. 25 ASU's 6-5 series-opening win at California.
Torkelson, a sophomore first baseman, now has 45 career homers, tied for fourth in school history with Barry Bonds and Brett Wallace. College Baseball Hall of Famer Horner is the school career homer leader with 56 from 1976-78.
In the 11th, with two outs and Carter Aldrete on second, Torkelson lined a single off Cal third baseman Hance Smith for what held up as the game winner.
