In December, Arizona State introduced Herm Edwards as its football coach. For the most part, coupled with a complicated news release detailing a new leadership model, it didn’t go over well.
A pro football television analyst, Edwards had not coached in nine years. He had not coached in college in nearly 30. National media questioned the hire, others mocked it.
“The overwhelming feeling among athletic administrators, between chuckles, is that this hire will turn into a Lovie Smith Sequel,” wrote one national reporter, referring to the former NFL coach who has struggled in two-plus seasons to revive the University of Illinois.
